Subject: Gospel 57 is: Let Us Break Bread Together Date: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 13:41:48 -0400 From: "Dr. Joe Campbell" To: Dear Vic, Thank you so much for your Black Gospel Midi Music from Victor James page http://www.dnai.com/~vic/gospel.htm I visited your site looking for MIDI variations on Amazing Grace to use on my best friend's memorial web site. Thank you for offering so many Amazing Graces (I also found some other nice Amazing Graces via www.metacrawler.com looking for "Amazing Grace MIDI"). I believe that your mystery MIDI file (let.mid) is based upon a beautiful Negro Spiritual and is known by various names with various lyrics. One name is "Let Us Break Bread Together" or "Let us break bread together on our knees" and is used as a Communion hymn. It's listed as "American, anonymous" and has lyrics like: Let us break bread together on our knees; Let us break bread together on our knees; When I fall on my knees With my face to the rising sun, O Lord, have mercy on me. Let us drink wine together on our knees; Let us drink wine together on our knees; When I fall . . . Let us praise God together on our knees; Let us praise God together on our knees; When I fall . . . --------------- And another version has lyrics like: He has fallen to the ground, on his knees, He has fallen to the ground, on his knees, When I fall down on my knees with my face to the rising sun, Oh, Lord, have mercy on me. -------------- I also believe that Simon Estes has recorded this on a spirituals CD, perhaps it might have better information than "anonymous" about the author. I've attached another MIDI version (although I like yours better). If you care to add a link, please do so to John K. Varhol's memorial web site: http://www.apl.jhu.edu/Classes/Notes/Campbell/John/ Happy Easter!
